A child usually receives the Sacrament of Confirmation around the age of ten. The child's parents, with the Parish's Sacraments Coordinator and the Parish Priest discern the readiness of a child to receive this Sacrament.
Confirmation perfects the grace of Baptism. The gift of the Holy Spirit affirms that a person is a child of God, incorporates them “more firmly into Christ”, strengthens their bond with the Church, associates them more closely with the mission of the Church, and helps them to “bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds” (Catechism of the Catholic Church CCC #1316).
The celebration of Confirmation is ordinarily reserved to the Bishop. The essential rite of Confirmation is the laying on of the Bishop’s hands and the anointing the forehead of the baptised person with sacred chrism, together with the words: "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit” (CCC #1320).
